LABORATORY SUPPORT PERSON

Description

Nova West Lab was established in 1989 as a small, private quality control laboratory, testing food products for basic nutritional and bacterial information. Its present location houses the following lab sections: food chemistry, environmental, and microbiology (two labs - containment levels 1, and 2). We analyze a variety of food products, soil, and water samples using a wide range of tests. Our clients rely on our services to not only ensure they comply with governmental regulations related to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Nova Scotia Department of Environment but also to meet their own quality specifications.
 
THE ROLE:
•      Following Nova West Laboratory’s many programs (Quality Program, Biosafety Program, Safety Program, and Sanitation Program).
•      Ability to learn and perform basic laboratory procedures, for example, media preparation, sterilizing media and lab equipment, and utensils.
•      Use a fax machine, answer the telephone, direct faxes and phone calls,
•      Greet the public and co-workers in person and by telephone,
•      Assist in the preparation of microbiological media, agars, etc., and some chemical solutions,
•      Use laboratory equipment (ex: weighing scales, autoclaves, dishwasher),
•      Maintain the laboratory and associated rooms in a clean condition and in good repair.
•      Report to the Laboratory Manager & Laboratory Supervisor.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
•      Valid driver’s license.
•      Work independently and with a team.
•      Good communicator and be well-presented.
•      A keen sense of responsibility
•      Keeping confidential all client information.
•      Previous work experience working in the cleaning industry and/or service industry is considered an asset.
•      Possession of cleaning skills (cleaning tableware, laboratory glassware and other laboratory-related utensils, countertops, cupboards, fume hoods, lab furnishings, and other items and surfaces)
The following are preferred requirements, with some ability to train gaps in qualifications.
•    Minimum requirement of a high school diploma, with a concentration and interest in the sciences.
•    Preference given to candidates with an undergraduate degree or certificate in relevant field of study (Food Sciences, Microbiology/Biology Chemistry)
•    Experience in a laboratory working environment is considered an asset.
•    Must be proficient in MS Office with writing skills
•    Experience with or comprehension of the following:
•    International Organization of Standardization - ISO/IEC 17025
•    Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
•    Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
•    Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines
•    High Sanitation and Cleaning Practices associated with standards for laboratory
•    Fluently bilingual (French / English) is considered an asset
•    Must be adaptable in working hours either Monday through Friday OR Wednesday to Sunday
